Research interests

  • Interpreter-mediated interaction in various settings – legal, health care, social security, radio, television, etc.
  • Interpreting as a profession and interpreting in professional practices
  • Testing and assessments of interpreters’ competences, interpreter education interpreter teacher education
  • Interpreting as everyday activity in multilingual work places and organisations (ad hoc-interpreting).

Current research

At present I’m involved in a larger research project, exploring the multilingualism and elderly care; the conditions for care recipients in Swedish care facilities, who don’t speak Swedish and for the care providers, who may or may not speak their languages. How is the language issue solved in everyday care and how is the language issue addressed in the education of care givers?

A recently completed project looked at criteria and systems for assessments of knowledge and competencies, necessary for interpreters who are to work in the legal sphere. The project – QUALITAS – addresses the issues raised in articles 2.8 and 5 of the European Directive 16th June 2010 on the rights to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings and was coordinated from the University of Alicante.

Education – development

I’m currently involved in developing our PhD program in Interpreting and Translation Studies. My mayor interest lies in theories and methods designed to explore interpreting practices of various kinds. I am also interested in developing interpreter teacher education. One of my latest publications (Wadensjö 2014) explores applied conversation analysis as a method to raise awareness among interpreter teachers about pit falls in applying role-play as a means of assessment.

I'm lecturing in courses at all levels, from basic to PhD courses, mainly in Interpreting, but also in Translation theory and academic writing. I'm also supervising thesis work at Bachelors, Masters and PhD level and function as examiner of theses at all these levels.

In Spring 2015 I'm lecturing in Dialogue Interpreting at the University of Nuuk.
